Chapter 7
“I know you probably hate me now, but I’ve learned from my mistakes. I’m not that person anymore.” I was pleading my case as we sat idle in the bumper-to-bumper LA traffic. I didn’t know why this small town chef’s opinion mattered to me so much, but it did. I’d never cared what anyone thought of me in the past – except maybe Barry.
His eyes were sad when he said, “I don’t hate you, but you’re not painting a very pretty picture. It’s stories like yours that perpetuate the rich kid stereotype. I like you, even knowing what you’ve done, but it’s not fair you got away with all the damage you caused.”
I was shaking my head before he even finished. “I didn’t get away with it. I was lucky my father’s best friend had taken pity on me, because my sentence would have been much harsher if I’d had a public defender. So I guess I may have gotten off easy, but I was sent away for ten years. Because of overcrowding, the pain of transferring me to an adult facility and good behavior, I only served five. But believe me – five years in a juvenile detention center is still hell.”
“I don’t even want to imagine. It makes me sad and angry you went through all of that. But we are in control of our choices and I can’t say I’m sorry you paid for your crimes.”
He was still holding my hand, so that was a good sign. But then again, it was obvious he was a good man. The traffic began to move and I realized I needed to get to the reason I’d spilled my skeletons. “I’m telling you this because it leads up to another transgression – though this one is by default.”
“There’s more?” Dominic groaned.
I nodded, not relishing telling this part of the story any more than I had the rest of it. “When I was released, my dad’s best bud took me under his wing. Barry was a commodities and currency broker. Very successful and the only ‘real’ family I thought I had. He was my champion when everyone else turned their backs on me. So when he offered me a job, I jumped at the chance.”
“What did you do?” He paused before saying, “Wait, I’m not sure I want to hear this.”
“I’m not sure I want to tell it to you, but it’s important.” Not that changing my mind was an option, but I hurried to get the rest out anyway. “I felt indebted to Barry for giving me a chance to make something of myself. So when there were hints along the way that he might not be the most scrupulous of businessmen, I ignored them. I know you, and everyone else in town, think that my grandmother came here to bring me back to Mystic, but that’s not the way it went down.
“The night before I arrived, Barry had thrown a Halloween party. Midway through the evening, a group of men dressed like mummies crashed the party and opened fire.
